Bath Cancer Unit Support Group (BCUSG) is delighted to announce the completion of its £495,000 Children’s Centre Building Project at the Royal United Hospital (RUH), Bath.
The project has delivered significant improvements to the Paediatric Oncology Department, creating safer, more efficient and welcoming facilities for children undergoing cancer treatment, their families and the clinical teams who care for them.
Fully funded by BCUSG, the project has addressed a number of important improvements identified by the hospital’s Paediatric Oncology team, providing enhanced facilities that could not otherwise have been funded through the NHS.

Improving treatment facilities and patient care
The refurbishment has transformed several areas within the department, including the creation of additional day-case treatment spaces, improved preparation and dispensing facilities, and a more welcoming outpatient reception area.
Key improvements include:
- Three new treatment spaces: Additional day-case facilities to increase capacity and provide a more comfortable environment for children receiving treatment.
- Modernised medication preparation facilities: Purpose-designed spaces with specialist medical cabinetry, improved storage, wall-mounted computer workstations and dedicated preparation areas to support the safe and efficient preparation of oncology medications.
- Improved outpatient waiting areas: Refurbished waiting rooms, upgraded flooring and enhanced facilities to provide a more comfortable environment for patients and families.
- Enhanced clinical working areas: Improvements to nursing workstations, preparation rooms and other clinical spaces to support staff and improve the day-to-day running of the department.
- A more welcoming reception: Reconfigured reception facilities, including a lowered wall and bespoke countertop, creating a more open and accessible arrival experience and improving patient flow.

Making a difference to children and their families
One of the main aims of the project was to improve the experience of children receiving cancer treatment.
Children undergoing oncology treatment often attend hospital repeatedly over extended periods, which can mean missed school days, disrupted family routines and considerable time away from normal activities.
The additional day-case treatment spaces will help the department manage patients more efficiently, reduce unnecessary waiting and minimise disruption to family life.
The improvements also support infection prevention, particularly important for children receiving cancer treatment who may have weakened immune systems. Providing dedicated treatment facilities helps reduce their exposure to infections commonly encountered on inpatient wards.

A significant improvement for hospital staff
The project has also delivered important benefits for the Paediatric Oncology team, providing improved working environments, better-designed clinical spaces and more efficient workflows.
During the refurbishment, staff were able to begin using some of the improved arrangements, including swapping the outpatient reception desk with the nurses’ workstation, delivering immediate improvements to patient flow and the working environment.
The completed facilities provide the team with better opportunities to organise their work, improve efficiency and focus on delivering the best possible care to young patients.

A project made possible by our supporters
The £495,000 project was made possible entirely through the fundraising efforts and generous support of Bath Cancer Unit Support Group’s donors, volunteers and supporters.
As a local, volunteer-run charity, BCUSG is proud to fund vital equipment, enhanced facilities and essential services for cancer patients at the Royal United Hospital that fall outside NHS funding.
This project is a wonderful example of what can be achieved through the generosity and commitment of our local community, making a lasting difference to children with cancer and the families who support them.
We are very grateful to a large number of our supporters who donated to the appeal or raised funds for it.
We continue to support the patients at the Paediatric Unit by funding the Nurse Associate who visits many of the patients in their homes or schools to take blood tests etc, thus reducing the time away from the classroom and minimising the disruption to their education.’
