Run by a small group of voluteers.
The Royal United Hospital (RUH) delivers acute treatment and care to a catchment area of approximately 500,000 people across Bath and the surrounding towns and villages in North East Somerset, South Gloucestershire, and North & West Wiltshire.
Thanks to having no premises or paid staff, and being run by a dedicated team of volunteers who typically cover their own expenses, the Bath Cancer Unit Support Group (BCUSG) operates with minimal overheads—allowing 90–95% of all funds raised to go directly to support projects.
We startedback in 1979.
The Bath Cancer Unit Support Group is a small, local charity run entirely by volunteers. We support the cancer services at the Royal United Hospital (RUH) in Bath by raising funds for vital equipment, enhanced facilities, and essential services that fall outside of NHS funding. Our goal is to improve treatment outcomes and enhance the well-being of local cancer patients.
Your donations make a meaningful and lasting difference to the lives of those affected by cancer in our community.
The charity’s origins date back to 1979, when Shepton Mallet farmer Chris Norman learned that the cancer unit at the RUH was at risk of being closed and relocated to Bristol. In response, he launched the Bath Cancer Unit Appeal to raise funds for a Linear Accelerator – the key piece of equipment used in delivering Radiotherapy.
The appeal gained strong support from local oncologists and Shepton Mallet’s Round Table, and thanks to their combined efforts, cancer treatments were retained in Bath. Today, cancer care is one of the four core medical specialities at the RUH.
Building on the success of the appeal, the Bath Cancer Unit Support Group was formally established in September 1985. Since then, we’ve remained committed to ensuring that local cancer patients receive the best possible care, close to home.
Our local branches.
The Bath Cancer Unit Support Group (BCUSG) is guided by 14 plus trustees and supported by around 100 dedicated volunteer fundraisers. Senior clinicians from the Oncology and Radiotherapy Units at the Royal United Hospital (RUH) submit project proposals—backed by RUH senior management—for consideration and approval by our trustees. Once approved, we begin fundraising to bring these projects to life.
We are actively encouraging the formation of new local branches to expand our reach across the RUH’s service area. Our established branches in Trowbridge and Frome have been highly successful in organising local fundraising events and engaging their communities.
We’re especially keen to grow our presence in surrounding towns and villages. New branch discussions are currently underway in Chippenham, North Wiltshire, and Bath. If you’re interested in volunteering or helping to launch a branch in your area, we’d love to hear from you.
Oncology services at the RUH, Bath.
The department specialises in the treatment of cancer and haematology conditions. Patients are cared for by a multidisciplinary team of doctors, specialist nurses, pharmacists, and radiographers within the state-of-the-art Dyson Cancer Centre at the Royal United Hospital in Bath.
Clinics are scheduled for new patients, those undergoing treatment, and follow-up appointments. The waiting areas serve individuals attending consultations, radiotherapy sessions, and chemotherapy treatments.
During clinic hours, refreshments—tea, coffee, and biscuits—are kindly provided by the Bath Cancer Unit Support Group and served by our dedicated volunteers. You can help us continue this small but meaningful service by making a donation using the button below.
